In the United States, Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday in May. In Mexico, Mother’s Day is always May 10. (Recognition of Día de las Madres began in 1922). This year, one celebration came right after the other. Many Mexican families like celebrating both days.
In Mexico, there is a mass at the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, where a Mariachi plays Las Mañanitas. The Virgin is a symbol of motherhood. She is often recognized as the Mother of Mexico. “She is also a symbol of hope and faith, she sustains and insures survival. To Mexicans on both sides of the border, Guadalupe is the symbol of our rebellion against the rich…against their subjugation of the poor and the indio.” -Anzaldua
