Wilmington Superstars Awards Dinner

This past Thursday, June 24th, marked the Wilmington Coordinating Council’s annual Wilmington Superstars Awards Dinner. The Awards dinner took place at Banning’s Landing Community Center, with a beautiful night view of the waterfront and the Vincent Thomas Bridge in the background. It began with dinner, and was followed by the presentation of awards to a variety of people and organizations that contribute to the Wilmington Community. Some of the Superstar Winners include:

Commissioner, Eleanor Montano– Woman of the Year
The presenters had a long list of the countless ways that Eleanor has contributed to the Wilmington Community. One thing that I found very touching was that she was responsible for raising $700,000 to buy the land where the Wilmington Boys and Girls Club is located.
Avalon Family Medical Group’s, Dr. El Sayad, M.D.– Doctor of the Year
He is an internal medicine and geriatrics specialist. Along with Mrs. Montano, he is a former honorary mayor of Wilmington. He was voted the best doctor in the South Bay by the Daily Breeze. He will also head the Wilmington Rehabilitation center and free dental clinic, due to open in September.
District Director, Erika Velazquez– Civil Servant of the Year
She was born and raised in Wilmington and is a Banning Alumni. She has been a civil servant for the 15th district (including Wilmington) for 18 years.
The Sunshine Club– Senior Club of the Year
They are a social club operating out of the Senior Center. They give scholarships to Banning High School Students and raise money for Homeboy Industries and the Wilmington Teen Center. They also do a variety of activities for veterans including making blankets.
Last but not least, congratulations to Hojas Tea House for winning Business of the Year.
